NCAA Division I Settlement Brings Major Changes to Scholarships and Recruiting

SportsRecruits has provided USA Athletics with critical information about the recently approved House v. NCAA settlement, which introduces significant changes to Division I college athletics.

While many initially viewed the elimination of scholarship caps as creating more opportunities, the reality includes new roster limits that fundamentally reshape recruiting.

For softball specifically, teams now have a 25-player roster cap compared to the previous 12-scholarship limit, meaning "scholarship limits are gone, but roster spots are not unlimited," according to SportsRecruits analysis.

The settlement creates immediate impacts for softball families, particularly regarding walk-on opportunities and recruiting timelines. Schools must opt into the new model by June 30, 2025, while coaches have until July 6, 2025, to designate over-cap returning players.

This compressed timeline means fewer spots for incoming recruits at programs operating near their roster caps, making early and strategic recruiting even more critical for prospective college athletes.

Essential Reading for Families:

SportsRecruits emphasizes that "roster limits don't mean opportunity is gone — they mean you need to be more intentional in your recruiting process."
